5 Life + Love Attraction Secrets I Learned from Dating in NYC

angela jia kim

Dating in NYC gets a bad rap, a really bad one.

If you google “what dating in NYC is like”, the first search results come up with articles like “8 Reasons Why Dating in New York City Is Actually Terrible” or “NYC’s Cutthroat Meat Market.”

I would often hear my friends lament their dating woes, stating how NYC has a revolving door of “what’s better behind that next swipe?”

My personal dating story from Radical Radiance, chapter 3:

After my ex-husband and I decided to amicably go our separate ways, I launched myself into the Manhattan dating world as a single mom in her forties. It was a scary and daunting move after twenty comfortable years of marriage, to then land in this unknown world of dating apps (a platform that didn’t exist when I was in my twenties!).

What was most interesting, however, is that as I treated dating like an exercise in making new friends, I actually enjoyed, savored, and relished the process of learning from new people and discovering aspects of myself that I liked—and it showed.

After a few months, I noticed that men would consistently tell me, “You are glowing.” At first, I thought it was the effects of my Savor Beauty products and my skin’s overall radiance that they were commenting on.

But as the conversations progressed, I realized that they were talking about an inner glow, and it surprised me that men could sense or see it.

What I believe all these men were responding to is a radiant source that’s nourished by spiritual intelligence. And this is something that everyone has access to.

I had a very different experience with dating in Manhattan—I had fun with it, and within six months, I unexpectedly found myself in a committed relationship with an amazing man who is now my partner. When we first met, he said, “You have a halo around you. I can’t explain what it is, but I am drawn to your energy aura.”

5 Life + Love Attraction Secrets

Everyone has access to authentic glowing energy that is magnetic. I recently shared five attraction secrets with Kimmy Seltzer, a confidence and dating therapist, on her podcast, Charisma Quotient. (These secrets can be applied to anything in life to manifest abundance, beauty, and joy. ☀️)

Secret #1: Approach dating (and life) with an open curiosity, a mindset to learn. Every date that I went on, my goal was to learn something new—like how to make a Manhattan, start a Spotify list, or discover a fantastic restaurant.
Secret #2: Treat dating like you are making friends and don’t forget to go on dates with girlfriends and yourself, too! (I call this Radiance Retreats in the book.)
Secret #3: Do the deep inner work to let go of the negativity of your past. It seeps into your body, wears on your face, and exudes from your energy; people may not be able to see it but they can sense it.
Secret #4: Make your life feel like a party. This advice is a game-changer whether you are dating or in a relationship! (And actually, it’s excellent career advice, too.)
Secret #5: Approach each date with a “no expectations, no limitations” mindset. This was (and still is) my motto, and when I shared it with my partner on our second date, he was smitten.
